Like its Switch sibling roughly a year ago this is a captivating old-school RPG with an extensive turn-based battle system and stunning art design, but also quite some grind and varying quality in the storytelling for the eight protagonists.
This could be a halfway decent addition to the ever-growing number of open world survival adventures. But certain design decisions like permadeath (which even From Software stayed away from) keep it from escaping mediocrity.
You will find motivating team abilities and well constructed tracks, but also some slight problems with visuals and balance. A decent, but futile try to dethrone Mario Kart 8 as this generation’s top fun racer.
Challenging mix of base building, expanding and battle, that would benefit from more content as well as variety and the “certain something” that would seperate it from your common run-of-the-mill strategy.
This was and still is one of the best JRPGs. If you haven’t played it yet, you should give it a chance. Despite its original age, It looks quite decent and the battle system is a dream once you get used to it.
